After being rescheduled due to COVID-19, the 2020 Fort Lauderdale Air Show is taking place this weekend – November 21 -22, 2020. Happening over Fort Lauderdale Beach, this annual event brings in military fighter jets and top-performance planes from all over the country. Recognized as a premiere event for the aviation industry, illustrious military and civilian aviator groups flock to this South Florida event to perform jaw-dropping aerial demonstrations in front of a global audience. Thinking of attending Fort Lauderdale Air Show 2020? Here’s what to expect.
COVID-Safe Boating Event
Originally set for May 2 – 3, the 2020 Fort Lauderdale Air Show was delayed 6 months due to the coronavirus pandemic. Despite the rising number COVID-19 cases in South Florida and rest of the country, organizers have decided to go ahead with the show. They will be implementing a series of “Stay Safe and Separate Initiatives” to ensure social distancing among spectators. Safety measures will include limiting ticket sales, larger venues, mask wearing requirements, and frequent sanitizing of public areas. However, since the 2020 Fort Lauderdale Air Show will take place over the public beach, the safest and most socially distanced way to see the exciting aerial demonstrations would be on your own boat or yacht.
“The stage for the Fort Lauderdale Air Show is two miles wide and 500 feet high. Spectators can watch from their backyard, balcony, boat or the beach, making it the ideal event for our community to host in the era of social distancing.” – Chris Lagerbloom, Fort Lauderdale City Manager1
Exciting Lineup of Performers
In addition to multiple world-class civilian aviator groups performing at this year’s air show, all four of the U.S. Air Force’s fighter jet demonstration teams will be performing aerial demonstrations right above Fort Lauderdale Beach. If you are planning to attend the Fort Lauderdale Air Show 2020, be on the look out for the F-22 Raptor, F-35 Lighting II, F-16 Viper and A-10 Thunderbolt II.
“The U.S. Air Force is providing an unprecedented level of support by sending all of their fighter jet demo teams to perform.” – Bryan Lilley, Co-Chair of the Fort Lauderdale Air Show.2
A Rare Air and Sea Duel
“The Fort Lauderdale Air Show gives the public a rare chance to witness this air-sea duel. The race is something we only do a couple of times each year.” – Steve Curtis, throttleman of the Miss GEICO boat-racing team3
Another event to look out for during the 2020 Fort Lauderdale Air Show is an air and sea duel. This “duel” will feature a modern-day speed boat and a World War II-era plane racing each other at a speed of up to 150 mph. Sponsored by insurance company GEICO, the race will be between a speedboat from the Miss GEICO offshore powerboat racing team and an open-cockpit SNJ plane, a training vessel popularly used during the second world war. It’s a spectacle not to be missed!
